When to rent a wood splitter
- After tree removal. The tree service left the rounds and you want the firewood.
- After a storm. Valley winter storms bring down limbs and whole trees. Clean up and heat the house with it.
- Orchard and property cleanup. Pulled or pruned almond, walnut and peach wood is good firewood once it’s split and dried.
- Stocking up for winter. Splitting a cord by hand is a weekend. With a 27-ton splitter it’s a few hours.
Using the splitter safely
- Run it on flat, level ground with the wheels chocked.
- Only one person works the controls. The second person stacks, away from the wedge.
- Wear gloves, safety glasses and closed-toe boots. Keep loose sleeves away from the beam.
- Keep your hands on the sides of the round, never on the ends where the wedge meets the wood.
- Cut rounds square on the ends so they sit flat against the wedge.
Getting more done in less time
Set it up next to the pile, with your stacking spot on the other side, so each piece moves once. Split the big rounds into halves first, then quarters. Have a second person feed rounds and stack while you run the lever. A 7×14 utility trailer moves the split wood to where you’re stacking it, or the rounds from where the tree came down.
Before you burn
Firewood needs time to dry. Freshly cut wood is mostly water and smokes badly. The Feather River Air Quality Management District, which covers Yuba and Sutter counties, may limit wood burning on poor air quality days in winter, so check before you light a fire.

Is 27 tons enough?
