Why rent a deck over instead of a regular flatbed
On a standard car hauler or utility trailer, the wheels sit inside the frame and the fenders take away about a foot and a half of width. A deck over trailer puts the deck on top of the frame, so the whole 8.5 ft is usable for 24 ft. That’s the difference between a pallet fitting flat and hanging over a fender.
What fits on a 24 ft deck over
- Compact equipment. Mini excavators, skid steers, compact tractors and side-by-sides, within the weight rating.
- Pallets and building material. Block, pavers, sod and bagged concrete on pallets, loaded with a forklift from the side.
- Long material. Lumber, steel, pipe and trusses up to about 24 ft without overhang.
- Ag and property loads. Hay, irrigation pipe, fencing supplies and equipment moving between properties around Sutter and Yuba counties.
- Two small loads at once. A riding mower and a pallet of material, or two side-by-sides.
Loading and securing equipment
Load the machine so it sits slightly forward of the trailer axles, about 10–15% of the total weight on the hitch. Use four separate tie-downs on equipment: one at each corner, pulling in opposite directions, attached to the machine’s tie-down points. Lower buckets and attachments to the deck before you strap.
California requires loads to be secured so they can’t shift or fall. Bring rated chains and binders for heavy equipment, and recheck everything after the first few miles. The speed limit for any vehicle towing a trailer in California is 55 mph.
